Altera officially announces independence from Intel, fully expanding FPGA business

This week, Altera officially raised a flag named after itself near its headquarters in San Jose, California, marking the division's separation from Intel and becoming an independent company. The newly established company will still be owned by Intel and will focus on expanding its FPGA products with greater flexibility while maintaining a strategic partnership with Intel.

Today marks a proud milestone for us as an independent FPGA company to officially raise the Altera flag, "Altera wrote in a statement released on the X platform." We are excited to drive innovation for the future with agility and focus, shaping the next generation of FPGA technology

FPGA is Altera's expertise and is particularly suitable for adapting to rapidly changing technological requirements without having to bear the high cost of ASIC development. Altera aims to strengthen its influence in mature industries such as automotive, communications, and aerospace, as well as emerging fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, edge technology, and 6G.

Regarding AI, FPGAs are very suitable for this field because they have flexibility and the cost of adding new instructions and data formats is relatively low. In addition to customizing AI applications, FPGAs can also be used to simulate upcoming AI processors before implementing them on silicon wafers. In addition, Altera's FPGA AI Suite integrates with frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch, allowing developers to build optimization solutions that are compatible with industry standards.

Although now independent, Altera still intends to maintain close relations with Intel foundries, which will manufacture its chips using competitive production nodes. This collaboration ensures a reliable supply chain while also giving Altera the freedom to collaborate with other contract manufacturers, enabling it to expand manufacturing options and maintain competitiveness. If the company's strategy is successful, an initial public offering (IPO) may follow.

Intel acquired Altera for $16.7 billion in 2015, its largest acquisition, and the company has high hopes for the FPGA developer as a diversified source of revenue and potentially enhancing its position in data centers. Now, Intel hopes that Altera can succeed as an independent entity so that it can obtain some additional cash during the IPO period.

Altera will be led by CEO Sandra Rivera and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Shannon Poulin.
