Apple develops oxide TFT LCD screen version of MacBook Air, expected to be launched in 2027

Apple has started developing a MacBook Air equipped with a thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD).

According to informed sources, Apple has been collaborating with component manufacturers on this project since the end of 2024. The new MacBook is expected to be launched in 2027. This will be the first time Apple has used oxide TFT LCD on its MacBook Air product line.

The Apple MacBook series is divided into high-end Pro models and low-end Air models. The 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch MacBook Pro launched by Apple in 2022 feature oxide TFT LCD. The 13.6-inch and 15.4-inch MacBook Air, launched simultaneously, use amorphous silicon (a-Si) TFT LCD, which has slower electronic movement speed than oxide TFT. The MacBook Pro launched at that time also used MiniLED as the light source.

Apple is likely to decide to postpone the adoption of OLED and hope to upgrade the MacBook Air series screens through other means.

According to sources, Apple originally planned to launch an OLED MacBook Air in 2027, but due to the postponement of this plan, other upgrades will need to be made during this period.

LG Display is highly likely to become a supplier of oxide LCDs. This South Korean display panel manufacturer has been a major supplier of Apple MacBook LCDs along with Japan's Sharp.

Due to lower than expected sales of OLED iPads released in 2024, Apple MacBook has postponed the adoption of OLED technology. The simultaneously launched iPad Air model also upgraded its screen from a-Si to oxide.
