On December 10 local time, Qualcomm announced the acquisition of Ventana Micro Systems Inc., further strengthening its technological presence in the RISC-V ecosystem.
Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Cupertino, Ventana specializes in high-performance, scalable, and secure compute chiplet solutions based on RISC-V architecture—the core focus of Qualcomm's acquisition. Its 2022 launch of the world's first RISC-V architecture server CPU, Veyron V1, claimed performance surpassing AMD's EPYC 7763; The second-generation Veyron V2, released in 2023 and manufactured using TSMC's 4nm process, outperforms AMD's high-end server chip Epyc 9754. The company plans to launch this product in early 2026 and has previewed that the next-generation Veyron V3 will feature a clock speed increased to 4.2GHz.
Industry analysis suggests that Qualcomm previously developed its proprietary Oryon CPU core through the acquisition of Nuvia, and the Ventana team complements Qualcomm's existing RISC-V and custom Oryon CPU development efforts. This acquisition will help Qualcomm integrate RISC-V technology into its computing platforms. It not only advances its return to the server CPU market but also accelerates the adoption of RISC-V architecture in core business areas like IoT, automotive electronics, and edge computing, breaking through efficiency and compute density bottlenecks in these sectors.
The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, though specific financial terms remain undisclosed. Upon completion, the synergistic integration of both companies' technologies is likely to significantly impact the global RISC-V market landscape and drive technological advancements across multiple sectors including server CPUs and automotive electronics.
