TSMC Kaohsiung 2-nanometer plant holds installation ceremony, with Apple and AMD expected to be the first customers

Today (November 26), TSMC's Kaohsiung 2-nanometer new factory will hold an equipment installation ceremony, setting three major records. Firstly, TSMC's first 12 inch factory in Kaohsiung will begin to enter the machine for mass production by 2025; Secondly, the factory started production more than half a year earlier than expected; The third is that after the production of the Kaohsiung factory, it will be connected to the Hsinchu Baoshan 2 nanometer factory in the north and south to produce the world's most advanced chips. It is expected that major companies such as Apple and AMD will be the first customers.

It is reported that TSMC's Kaohsiung factory's 2 nanometer new plant installation ceremony today is defined as an "internal non public event", and the company's public relations window remained tight lipped on the relevant issues yesterday (25th), keeping them confidential. The industry has reported that officials including Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi mai and partners from cooperative factories have been invited to attend.

TSMC has laid out a 2 nanometer layout in Taiwan, with two new factories in Baoshan, Hsinchu and Kaohsiung advancing simultaneously, and is expected to start mass production by 2025. Among them, Baoshan First Factory takes the lead and started equipment installation in April this year. In June 2024, it will use NVIDIA's cuLitho platform combined with AI to accelerate the risk trial production process. Baoshan Second Factory will also maintain progress in the future.

In terms of the new factory in Kaohsiung, it is TSMC's first 12 inch factory in Kaohsiung, originally planned to enter with mature processes. In August 2023, the board of directors approved the expansion towards 2 nanometer technology. The related equipment was originally scheduled to be installed as early as the third quarter of 2025. With the inauguration ceremony of the new factory in Kaohsiung today, the overall schedule is more than half a year ahead of the original plan. As the Kaohsiung factory gradually enters production, TSMC's 2nm will achieve a series connection between Kaohsiung and Baoshan in the north and south.

Industry interpretation: TSMC's new Kaohsiung factory has begun installation, indicating that TSMC has officially transitioned from building the factory to the production stage, and is expected to further catalyze the mature development of the high-tech industry chain in southern Taiwan.

Corporate analysis shows that TSMC is actively setting up factories around the world and has not stopped building factories in Taiwan. Chen Chi mai previously revealed that TSMC's Kaohsiung plant P1 will officially start mass production next year, P2 plant is under construction, P3 plant will start construction in October, and P4 and P5 plants have recently applied to the Kaohsiung City Government to establish factories. There are at least five plans to build factories in Kaohsiung, which will drive local economic prosperity.

TSMC is full of confidence in accepting orders for 2 nanometers. Chairman Wei Zhe jia recently stated at a press conference that high-speed computing (HPC) is accelerating towards chiplet design, but this will not affect customers' adoption of 2 nanometers. Instead, there is an increasing trend among customers to inquire about the demand for 2 nanometers, which is currently higher than 3 nanometers, and it is expected that production capacity will also increase.

According to industry observations, TSMC's most advanced process is currently producing the 3-nanometer family at Nanko. If Kaohsiung successfully starts mass producing the 2-nanometer family, it will become the most advanced production base. In addition, due to strong market demand, it was previously reported in the supply chain that Nanke is expected to join the production of 2 nanometers in the future. It is estimated that the earliest expansion of mass production will be from the end of 2025 to 2026, and some production lines are also expected to switch to the production of 2 nanometers.
